Red-Haired Shanks Biography Shanks is the leader of the Red Haired Pirate Crew and also one of the Yonkou, one of the four emporers who rule of the second half of the Grand Line, known as the New World. His crew is very large, however, he is usually only seen with his closests companions: Lucky Roux ( Known as the fastest man in the world, even though he is very large. ), Ben Beckman, and Yasopp ( Usopp's father ). Shanks was first seen using Luffy's hometown as a base for his pirate crew. He quickly grew a strong relationship with the boy, even though he regularly made fun of him. He even once said "Making fun of Luffy is my joy." He regularly makes fun of the fact that Luffy can't swim, even though he wants to be a pirate and the mutters almost nothing when Luffy described his devastatingly powerful attacks, such as fists like a pistol. One day, while they were all in a bar in Luffy's hometown, after Luffy had stabbed himself under his eye trying to impress Shanks, a man barged through the doors. He was a Mountain Bandit with an 8 million bounty on his head. After discovering that all of the sake had been given to Shanks and his pirates, he became angry. Shanks offered the man some all of his, but he simply bashed it in Shanks's face. He left after that incident, Shanks cleaning up his mess. Later that day, the Mountain Bandit had come back, however only Luffy was in the bar ( Luffy had gotten in an argument with Shanks after eating a Devil Fruit, the Gomu Gomu no Mi, so they weren't talking anymore ). Luffy yelled at the Mountain Bandit, telling him not to say anything bad about Shanks. This ended in the Mountain Bandit grabbing Luffy and kidnapping him. Soon after, Shanks finally found out about this and when to find Luffy. He quickly discovered them and was about to take Luffy back, but the Mountain Bandit used a smoke screan to get away in a small rowboat, sailing off to sea. While being a far ways out from the coast of the island, the Mountain Bandit through Luffy into the sea, letting him sink and die. However, a large Sea King came up behind them and at the Mountain Bandit. Luffy watched in horror, wailing his arms and screaming. The Sea King spotted Luffy and was about to come in and eat him also, however, someone saved Luffy. Shanks had appeared, and whipped Luffy out of the way, the Sea King biting, but missing Luffy. Shanks looked up at the Sea King, and with a simple stare and a "Get Lost" the Sea King fled as quickly as it could. Even though Shanks and Luffy were now safe, Luffy was still wailing. Shanks, in the process of saving Luffy's life, had sacrificed his entire right arm. Not long later, back on the shore of Luffy's hometown, Shanks was getting ready to leave the island and heading back into the open sea. Luffy stated that he didn't want to go with Shanks because he was going to be a great and powerful pirate all on his own. Luffy yelled that he would become the most powerful pirate in the world and find One Piece, becoming the Pirate King! So, after hearing this, Shanks gave Luffy his precious straw hat, his treasure and told Luffy that when he became a great and powerful pirate, he would return that hat to him. In tears, Luffy watched as Shanks got on his pirate ship and sailed off. Later in the series, Shanks was seen on a small island. Mihawk had come to him handing him a wanted poster. The poster was none other than Strawhat Luffy's. Even later in the series, it was confirmed that Shanks was out to meet Whitebeard to discuss the fact that Ace was going after Blackbeard. The government didn't want such a thing to happen, but Shanks couldn't be stop. Regardless of a berrier of Marines put up to block Shanks, Shanks came face to face with Whitebeard. Whitebeard stated that he was surprised to see Shanks without an arm, but Shanks simply stated he gave it off to a new era. However, his missing limb wasn't the reason he wanted to see Whitebeard. He went on to say that he wanted Whitebeard to stop Ace from going on to find Blackbeard. Whitebeard refused. This caused Shanks to get angry, so he pulled out his sword. Whitebeard did the same, pulling out his weapon, and they clashed, the force splitting the clouds above in half.
